THE IMPORTANCE OF CROP SIMULATION MODELS FOR  CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ASSESSMENT, ADAPTATION, AND MITIGATION IN EUROPE

BACKGROUND

Climate change, previously considered an environmental problem, has begun to be defined as a climate crisis since its effects intensify faster than previously thought, cause severe economic losses, and threaten food security. However, determining the possible impacts of climate change is an absolute necessity for planning by decision-makers. Crop simulation modeling has become a key tool for simulating the potential effects of climate change on agricultural production.

OBJECTIVES:

  • The historical development of crop simulation models and recent innovations
  • Regional assessments of the impact of climate variability and climate change
  • Estimating yield gaps at the cropping system level
  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • International collaborations in crop simulation model studies
